Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions people ask us most on calls and texts.
Cost & Funding
1. Is there a deposit? What do I need to pay to move in?
There is no security deposit. You pay a one-time, non-refundable move-in fee (see pricing above) plus your first rent payment. Call us if you have questions about your move-in costs.
2. Do you accept Medicaid, insurance, or Magellan?
Medicaid and private insurance do not pay for sober living rent, because we don’t provide clinical services. We accept TTF funding through the Idaho Department of Correction, and IDOC must confirm it before move-in. We accept Magellan only at our Nampa men’s home, and it must be authorized before move-in. None of our women’s homes accept Magellan.
3. How do I pay rent?
You can pay by check or money order made out to Phoenix House, or by card online through the Sobriety Hub app (a card processing fee applies). Family members can pay on a resident’s behalf.
Applying & Moving In
4. How do I apply, and what happens next?
Fill out the free online application on this website. After we review it, we’ll call you to set up an interview. That interview usually includes peer leaders from the home. If you’re approved, we’ll schedule your intake and move-in. If you’re in a hospital, jail, or treatment program and can’t get online, have your case manager call us.
5. Do you have openings? How long is the wait?
Availability changes weekly. Check the “Current Availability” button above. The fastest way to get a bed is to apply now, because your application puts you on our list. We generally can’t hold a bed without payment.
6. Where are the homes?
We have 5 men’s homes and 2 women’s homes in Boise, mostly on the west side, and 1 men’s home in Nampa. We give exact addresses after you’re accepted.
7. Do I need a job?
You don’t need a job to apply, but you do need a plan to pay rent. That can be work, disability or Social Security income, or other support. If you’re job hunting, you’ll be expected to find work quickly.
8. Can I live here if I’m on probation or parole? Can you send a letter to my PO or the court?
Yes, you can live here while on probation or parole. Phoenix House is a recovery residence, so what matters is your commitment to recovery. With your written permission, we can provide an acceptance letter or residence verification to your PO, attorney, or court.
9. Is Phoenix House treatment or rehab?
No. We are peer-led sober living, not treatment. We don’t provide clinical services, medication management, or 24/7 on-site staff. If you need that level of support, a higher level of care may be a better fit first. You are welcome to attend outpatient treatment while living with us.
Living Here
10. What are the house rules?
The basics are:
- Curfew is 10 PM for your first 30 days and 11 PM after that if you’re in good standing. Exceptions are made for work and recovery activities.
- No overnight passes during your first 30 days.
- At least 3 recovery meetings a week, plus a weekly house meeting.
- Random drug and alcohol testing.
- Daily assigned chores.
- Smoking and vaping are allowed outside in designated areas only.
11. Do you accept individuals undergoing MAT treatment or who use Suboxone?
Yes, including Suboxone and methadone, as long as it’s medically supervised. Prescription medications must be kept secured. Kratom is not allowed.
12. Do you have private rooms?
Yes, we have private rooms, but they are a privilege that must be earned. We don’t give private rooms to people new to recovery. Everyone starts in a shared room, and private rooms are assigned by seniority and good standing in the home.
13. How many residents live in each room?
Most of our rooms are double occupancy. We follow the National Association of Recovery Residences standard for square footage per person, and we don’t use bunk beds. If a room has more than 2 beds, it is a very large room, such as a master bedroom. We also have private rooms.
14. What’s provided in the homes?
All of our homes are fully furnished and comfortable. We provide paper products, cable, big-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, computers and printers, basic home supplies, coffee, and bedding. Food is not provided.
15. Do you allow pets?
Rarely, but sometimes. We allow only 1–2 pets per home. Management must approve the pet AND the house has to vote to allow it. Service animals and emotional support animals are not pets. If you have a disability and need an assistance animal, let us know and we’ll review it as a reasonable accommodation request.
16. Do you have couples or coed homes?
No. All of our homes are single-gender, and we don’t house couples together.
Families, Children & Visitors
17. Do you allow children?
Yes, we love kids! Some restrictions apply, and children need their own paperwork. Ask us about details.
18. Do you allow visitors?
Yes, we do! Visitors are welcome during visiting hours (noon–8 PM). We want every home to be a comfortable environment for all residents.
19. Can you tell me if my loved one lives there?
To protect our residents’ privacy, we can’t confirm or deny whether someone lives with us. We’re glad to take a message.
20. Can I tour a home?
Yes. Call us to schedule a tour.
